"At first i thought the fuel economy was pretty poor but it got better after break in. used for hay operations and pasture maintaince mostly and winter feeding chores. Have had 2of the metric sized roll pins to break or rust in two. one at the clutch and one at the outboard hydraulic leaver. also some minor leaks at rear hyd couplers and the o ring at the hyd pump and the PTO brake failed but was replaced under warrenty. same battery still in service since new. good sized and plenty of power."

"I grew up with 200 series Masseys, so this tractor was a natural progression (more power and fuel efficiency than a 275). It has been a solid tractor. Note the engine change on later models. I greatly prefer the 268 motor, same as the 596 Massey but w/out the turbo. Have well over 1800 hrs. with no major problems. I use it for any job-including loader work, plowing, cultivating, and general choring. The FWA really makes this tractor super capable. It still has the factory battery! If you use the combining valve, it will make the loader fly."

REVIEWER'S ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Pros: Dependable, tough, starts well in any weather. Cons: Shuttle linkage is crude, the lighting is poor. Type of User: Commercial Farmer Location: USA KS I also considered buying: Massey Ferguson 481, Massey Ferguson 2660HD

Hard Working Tractor

Model year: 2003 Date Purchased: 2013-02-02 Number of Hours: 990

"I haven't had this tractor for to long but have used it quite a bit. It is used so there are a few things that need attention. The shuttle linkage needed to be adjusted. The clutch needs adjustment and the brakes stop but have to stand on them on a hill...and I have lot's of those. So far I have been mainly working on roads. There is 1 mile of driveway and an old rock quarry of sorts. It is hard work on the tractor getting the ground to give up the desired rock but so far this tractor is doing great. I didn't get any manuals for it but have some coming. AGCO publishing has them but don't give them away---expensive! That's my review. Oh, couldn't get 'er done without the 4 wheel drive; a must have here."

REVIEWER'S ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Pros: Hard working, soundly built, plenty of power. Cons: Hard brakes, needs clutch and shuttle adjustments (on me to do). Type of User: Homeowner 50-100 Acres Location: USA OR I also considered buying: Kubota L3240, John Deere 3650

MF471 4WD Shuttle Drive w/1055 loader - Diesel
rating
5.0

Model year: 2006 Date Purchased: 2006-10-15 Number of Hours: 501

"Bought this tractor new with a 1055 loader and 7' bucket (oversized) with grapple claw. The 471 tractor has proven dependable in all circumstances so far. It is used for mowing, raking, and baling hay, hauling hay wagons, and stock trailers, bushhogging, plowing, lifting etc. and just about any other random situation that comes up. It does a lot of its work on steep hills and the 4Wheel drive really gets a workout. It has always performed admirably and is a great tractor for the price. It has never refused to start even on cold winter mornings and has never been stuck even in deep mud. The only negatives I have about this tractor are that the paint has begun to fade in the hot sun, and that the seat has worn and started to crack. Otherwise, I can't fault the 471 for anything... solid tractor!"

REVIEWER'S ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Pros: Shuttle shift and 4WD are excellent features Cons: rear remote levers are a little too close to the right leg and can get bumped if you turn to look over your right shoulder when baling Type of User: Homeowner 50-100 Acres Location: USA IN I also considered buying:

MF 471 w/MFWD
rating
4.7

Model year: 2004 Date Purchased: 2004-09-15 Number of Hours: 425

"Massey-Ferguson 471 MFWD platform tractor w/shuttle, w/Bushog M446 Loader. With 73 HP at the flywheel and 60+ PTO HP, the MF 471 fit the bill for my usage needs when purchased. It is used to plow, disc, harrow, mow, bale, and transport hay (4X5's), bushhog (yeah, that's the term here in the South),pallet handling, and general grounds-work. I have pushed the limits with this tractor, both in terms of pulling and hydraulics. I can say without qualification that it has performed admirably and above expectations. As for features, it has all the basic needs covered. It doesn't get 5 stars simply because it can't match the features available on the more pricey 4-number series MF's. As for reliability, it has been stellar. I only mark it lower because of an alternator problem, which was fixed under warranty. Overall, absolutely a reliable, hard-working tractor worth the price paid."

REVIEWER'S ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Pros: Price-point compared to 4-series tractors; Perkins power; hydro output; reliability Cons: not as feature-laden as the more expensive series; no hydraulic shuttle (option is available) Type of User: Homeowner 50-100 Acres Location: USA TN I also considered buying: Case-IH C80, New Holland TD85D
